We’re not here to make you feel behind. We’re here to help you catch up.
If you’ve ever stood in a grocery aisle, flipped over a bottle, and thought — I don’t even know what half of this is — you’re in the right place.
Most of us didn’t grow up reading ingredient lists. We bought what was on sale, what our parents bought, what seemed fine. Then something shifted. A health scare. A label that didn’t add up. A child who kept getting sick and a doctor who shrugged. And suddenly “fine” wasn’t good enough anymore.
That’s where Old Barn Organics comes in.
Where this started
We didn’t build this site from a research library. We built it from 25 years of working inside homes, hospitals, schools, and commercial facilities — places where air quality, surface contamination, and building materials had real consequences for real people.
That work — servicing residential and commercial HVAC systems, designing air purification setups, conducting in-home inspections, managing mold remediation — taught us something that sounds simple but takes years to actually believe: you can’t treat a symptom and call it solved. You have to find the source.
Our time in Florida also brought us into contact with people who changed how we thought about food and product safety. Through our indoor environmental work, we became close with Richie and Julie Gerber, former owners of Bread of Life Natural Foods Market. They had a way of cutting through the noise that stuck with us. Richie once said something we still think about: if you look at a product label and can’t pronounce the ingredients, it’s probably not organic.
Simple. Memorable. And more useful than most certification guides we’ve read since.
Why we created Old Barn Organics
At some point, we realized our professional knowledge and our personal life were the same conversation. We were doing the same research at home — reading certifications, scrutinizing labels, figuring out what “natural” actually meant on a cleaning product — that we were doing on job sites.
The difference was that we had 25 years of context to lean on. Most people don’t.
So we started this site for the person who’s motivated but overwhelmed. Who wants to do better for their family but doesn’t know where to start — or who to trust. Who’s skeptical of brands that claim everything is clean and green, because they’ve been burned by that language before.
We’re not here to tell you to throw out everything in your house. That’s not realistic, and it’s not helpful. What we can do is tell you where it actually matters, explain what certifications like USDA Organic or COSMOS really mean, and help you spend your energy — and your budget — where it makes the most difference.
What you’ll find here
Old Barn Organics covers the whole household: food and produce labels, personal care and skincare, cleaning products, baby items, gardening, and local resources. We’ve organized everything around one question: if you can only do one thing, what should it be?
Every piece of content we publish is sourced and specific. We don’t use vague wellness language. We don’t recommend products we haven’t looked into. And we don’t pretend the organic world is simpler than it is.
We’re a family living this alongside you. We make trade-offs too. We think that matters.
